A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers. Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters.[1]

Many newsletters are published by clubs, churches, societies, associations, and businesses, especially companies, to provide information of interest to their members or employees. Some newsletters are created as money-making ventures and sold directly to subscribers.

General attributes of newsletters include news and upcoming events of the related organization, as well as contact information for general inquiries.

Writing useful articles is the most accepted way to attract potential targeted customers to your commercial web site. It costs you nothing but a little time and effort!

Following these tips in order will go a long way towards getting your article published:

1. Read the publisher's submission rules carefully. Make sure you know:

Article length (minimum/maximum)

Follow these rules to the letter and you will increase your chances by a factor of two.

2. Get a copy of the newsletter before you send in your article submission. Ask yourself:

Does this ezine have their featured articles buried under a sea of ads?

Does this newsletter seem to feature only well-known writers? Does this ezine seem to run only articles already published in other newsletters?Has this ezine published a very similar article to yours in the recent past?Does this newsletter feature a lot of off-topic articles or ads? If your answers to any of the above are "yes", then submitting your article to that particular newsletter will give you borderline results at best.

3. Find the publisher's name and address your article submission to him/her. Write: "Dear Mr. Jones" rather than "Hi Joe". You don't know Joe, and should not be addressing him by his first name. Also, spell the publisher's name correctly! It only takes a few extra seconds...

4. Write "Article submission" in your email subject line.

5. Now write an introductory paragraph that tells the newsletter owner:

Where you got his name and address.What your article is about (be brief!)

Why you are sending your article to him and how it would benefit his subscribers.

Thank the publisher for his consideration. Ask him to pass your article on to other ezine publishers if he cannot use it. Include a resource box that tells the newsletter owner your name, title, web page address and email address. Some publishers also require your mailing address and telephone number.

6. Now cut and paste your article. Put some sort of border before your headline and after your resource box. This makes your article's start and end points very clear.

7. Your article headline must have "stopping power"! Most ezine owners will look only at your headline. If the headline is not exciting or does not motivate them to read the first paragraph, you have lost! Remember, many newsletter publishers receive hundreds of article submissions per day.

8. Make the ezine publisher's task easy by writing short paragraphs and sentences. Use numbered lists to get your points across fast. Use simple, everyday words. The quicker the newsletter owner can read your article, the more inclined he will be to publish it.

9. Be sure your submission is not a thinly-disguised advertisement for your products. Think of something useful and unique that you would save your fellow Internet entrepreneurs time and money!

10. Put a resource box at the end of the article. There are various ways to do this, but most ezine owners want you to limit it to six lines. See my resource box at the end of this article. Note that the only link to my web site is here!

11. Take a look at my web page address in my resource box. Notice the "/?thisEzine.html" part at the end? This is called "keying". It makes it easy to track where your click-thrus are coming from. You will buy paid advertising in ezines that send many potential customers to your commercial web site.

12. Have realistic expectations. If an ezine owner says he has 1000 subscribers, figure that only half, or about 500, will actually glance through the newsletter from top to bottom. (Note that I said "glance", not "read"). Figure that only 100 or so will pause and read even a great headline. Out of that 100, perhaps 20 will read your article carefully. These 20 are potential customers. And out of that 20, perhaps four(4) subscribers will click through to your commercial website. And out of that four(4) that click through, you might get one(1) sale. I know this doesn't sound like much, that's why you have to find which ezines give you the most click-thrus and then ADVERTISE in those newsletters.
